Gorman Named CIAA Player of the Year, Wiggins Tabbed CIAA Rookie of the Year‏

HAMPTON, VA – Tricia Gorman and Colby Wiggins highlighted the 2011 CIAA Softball and Baseball yearly honors for Chowan University. Gorman was named CIAA Softball Player of the Year, while Wiggins was tabbed CIAA Baseball Rookie of the Year. In total, five softball players and eight baseball players from CU were honored.
 
Gorman led the CIAA in several major offensive categories this season. She compiled 66 hits, 104 total bases, 4 sacrifice flies, and 77 RBI, all of which led the CIAA. According to the most recent NCAA statistical rankings (April 13th), Gorman led the NCAA (Divisions I, II, and III) with 70 RBI. Starting all 48 games for the Hawks, she hit .437 from the plate and totaled team-highs in doubles (15), home runs (7), and put-outs (293).
 
Joining Gorman on the CIAA First Team were Allie Kolezynski, Fahren Munro, and Mindy Byrd. Kolezynski was a duel threat all season for Chowan, hitting for a .412 average and picking up 10 wins on the mound. She had team-highs in at-bats (153) and walks (24).
 
Fahren Munro hit .427 and scored 63 runs. She was 39-40 on the base paths and tallied five triples. Mindy Byrd hit for a .305 average and also hit five triples, to go along with three home runs. Freshman catcher Liz Sill was selected to the CIAA All-Rookie team. She started 47 games and had a .382 on-base percentage.

 
The Hawks baseball squad placed three players on the CIAA First Team. Freshman Colby Wiggins was named CIAA Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the First Team and All-Rookie Team. Wiggins hit .355 and was 16-18 in stolen base attempts on the season.
 
Justin Bagbey and Ryan Moore joined Wiggins on the First Team. Bagbey, last year's CIAA Player of the Year, hit .359 this season, with 5 home runs and 10 doubles. His .573 slugging percentage and 242 put-outs were team highs. Moore, who was also named to the All-Rookie Team, hit .326 and collected team-highs with 135 at-bats, 42 runs, 11 doubles, 6 home runs, and 77 total bases. Moore also had a 4-0 record on the mound and three saves.
 
Chowan placed four players on the CIAA Second Team. Brett Garrett went 8-3 this season with a 2.27 ERA. He threw four complete games and two shutouts. He struck out 70 batters and held opponents to a .230 batting average. John DesChamps went 5-4 on the mound with a 2.87 ERA. He threw four complete game shutouts and struck out 63 batters. Brett Overton scored 34 runs while hitting at a .315 clip. He led the team with eight sacrifice bunts on the year. Rounding out the Second Team was William Ward, who hit .337 from the dish. He stole 11 bases and had 4 doubles this year.
 
Josh Catalano joined Colby Wiggins and Ryan Moore on the All-Rookie Team. He hit .346 and scored 38 runs for the Hawks. Catalano had a .986 fielding percentage and laid down four sacrifice bunts.
