DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central University senior C.J. Wilkerson has been named the Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2011 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and on the hardwood as a member of the men’s basketball team.

A native of Oxford, N.C., Wilkerson charged the Eagles to a 5-4 record in January, including an impressive 3-1 mark on the road. The senior guard averaged 23.0 points per game, while shooting 46.0 percent from the field, 47.2 percent from three-point range and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line. He added 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per contest, while averaging an exhaustive 39.3 minutes per outing.

After netting 30 points at Norfolk State on Jan. 22, Wilkerson exploded for a career-high 41 points to lead the Eagles to an overtime victory over rival North Carolina A&T on Jan. 24 in Greensboro, N.C. His offensive output ranks third in the NCCU men’s basketball record books, and represents the most points scored by an Eagle in 26 years. In one of the greatest hardwood performances in NCCU history, Wilkerson also topped the Eagles with six assists to go along with four rebounds.

"C.J. Wilkerson carried us," NCCU head coach LeVelle Moton said about the A&T victory. "My job was easy, I just drew on the board and said, 'Get the ball to him and get out of the way.' "

Two days after the A&T win, Wilkerson sparked the Eagles to another road celebration with 25 points at Western Illinois.

A sociology major at NCCU, Wilkerson achieved a grade point average of more than 3.3 in the fall 2010 semester and continues to maintain a GPA better than 3.0.
