Bethune-Cookman Wins Regular Season Crown, Earns Top Seed

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., May 12, 2010- The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats earned the top seed in the 2010 MEAC Baseball Championship. The tournament begins May 20-23 at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Wildcats recorded an unblemished 18-0 mark to earn the regular season title. Winners of 12 MEAC baseball crowns, Bethune-Cookman (32-18) will compete for their fifth consecutive title.

North Carolina A&T (25-24) posted a 15-3 conference mark to secure the second seed. Norfolk State clinched the third seed with a 9-9 record, while Delaware State finished in fifth with an 8-10 mark in conference play.

Coppin State is making their first tournament appearance since the 2006 season. The Eagles clinched the fifth spot with a 7-11 conference mark. Maryland Eastern Shore and Florida A&M finished the regular season tied at 3-15 in conference play, however the Hawks earned the sixth seed following the conference tie-breaker.

Only the top six teams qualify to compete for the MEAC tournament title. The winner will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Baseball Regional scheduled for June 4-7. Florida A&M (3-15) was eliminated from tournament play following the conference tiebreaker.

The 2010 MEAC Baseball Championship Tournament begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, with #2 North Carolina A&T facing #5 Coppin State. #1 Bethune-Cookman will matchup #6 Maryland Eastern Shore for game two beginning at 2 p.m., while #3 Norfolk State will take on #4 Delaware State in third game of the day beginning at 6 p.m. The action continues on Friday and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. A complete bracket is available on www.MEACsports.com.
