NCAT’s Freeman, UMES’ Johnson and NSU’s Davenport Earn Weekly Accolades

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. May 11, 2010- North Carolina A&T’s Kelvin Freeman earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in baseball, the conference announced on Tuesday. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Tre-von Johnson earned Rookie of the Week accolades, while Norfolk State’s Chase Davenport was named Pitcher of the Week.

Freeman (1B, 6-4, Fr., Wilmington, North Carolina) batted .643 (9-for-14) to lead the Aggies to a 3-0 sweep of Coppin State last week. Freeman posted a school-record nine RBI, which included a grand slam and two-run homer in the second game of a doubleheader against the Eagles. For the week, Freeman tallied three home runs, one double and 13 RBI. The first baseman added 21 putouts and one assist in the victories.

Johnson (OF, 6-0, Fr., East Market, Maryland) hit .368 to aid the Hawks to a 3-2 mark. Johnson recorded seven hits in 19 at-bat appearances with one triple and six RBI.

Davenport (P, 6-0, Sr., Wooster, Ohio) tallied a 0.00 ERA in seven innings last week. Against VCU, Davenport pitched two innings and allowed two hits and one walk. He earned the win for the Spartans against Delaware State striking out three of the 15 batters he faced, while allowing only one hit in the victory.

Other Top Performers:

Bryan Chaikowsky (UMES) hit .533 with one home run, two doubles and 10 RBI in five games last week.

John DesChamps (UMES) struck out six batters and tallied a 1.29 ERA in a non-conference win over North Carolina Central.

Gabriel Hernandez (B-CU) struck out five of the 16 batters he faced to earn his fifth victory of the year against the Delaware State Hornets.

DJ Leonard (B-CU) led the Wildcats with a .579 batting average. He posted two home runs, one double and eight RBI to aid B-CU to a 3-1 mark last week.

Nick Oelker (NCAT) earned the win against Coppin State with an ERA of 1.12. Oelker struck out five of the 33 batters he faced in eight innings.

Sammy Serafine (NSU) batted .462 with one double and four RBI in four games for the Spartans.

Chris Warren (NSU) posted one triple, one double and 10 RBI to aid the Spartans to a 3-1 mark last week.
