PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Wesley Griswold’s team-leading round of 82 helped to propel the Winston-Salem State University men’s golf team to an opening-round team total of 345 and a 14th place finish following day one action from the 24th PGA Minority Golf Championship from Port St. Lucie, Florida on Friday.

Griswold navigated the challenging par-72, 6,830-yard Wanamaker Course with a 10-over par round of 82 as he led three WSSU golfers who recorded rounds in the 80’s.

Kevin Veach carded a round of 85 and Kenneth Lathan recorded a round of 88 as WSSU turned in a strong showing in opening-round action.

Kevin Kirakossian, a 19-year-old freshman at the University of Texas Pan-American, making his debut at the PGA Golf Club knocked home a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Friday on the Wanamaker Course to cap a tournament-leading 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the 24th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.

Kirakossian's seven-birdie, three-bogey performance propelled the Broncs' quintet from Edinburgh, Texas to a 290 total and a five-stroke Division I lead over defending champion Tennessee State University.

Jackson State University, which won the last of its eight national titles in 1998, is third with 297 and Bethune-Cookman University of Daytona Beach, Fla., fourth at 298.

Second round action begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning from Port St. Lucie Florida.
