Shaw’s Falcato Named CIAA Tennis Player of the Year Sherri Fillingham 04/15/10 Shaw Has Six All-CIAA; Wins Academic Award (Ettrick,
VA) – Shaw’s Fabio Falcato has been named the CIAA Men’s Tennis Player
of the Year, as well as an All-CIAA selection. All six players on the
team were named All-CIAA. In addition, the team took home the Academic
Award for the highest team GPA among the CIAA men’s tennis teams.Falcato played the entire season at the number one slot, and finished the year 17-8 overall while facing the top competition on each team. In the CIAA, he was one of four Bears to finish the season 12-0. Falcato is the seventh ranked player in the Atlantic Region. In doubles, Falcato and partner Medhi Ben-Cheikh finished 19-6 overall, and 11-1 in the CIAA. Ben-Cheikh was undefeated in singles at 12-0 along with Milos Stankovic and Kalada Kienka. Kienka and Stankovic finished the season 23-2 in doubles. Martin Faison finished the season 9-11, but 6-2 in the conference. Antoine Jacobs, who was also named this week’s CIAA Rookie of the Week, finished 14-9 on the year, and 9-2 in the conference. Together, the pair were 8-10 in doubles, 5-2 in the CIAA. As a team, Shaw took home the award for the highest team GPA among all CIAA men’s tennis teams. The six men average a 3.5 GPA. The Bears finished the season 12-0 in the CIAA, earning them the number one seed, and a bye into the second round. They will play the winner of the Saint Augustine’s-Virginia Union match at 1:00 pm tomorrow on the Virginia State campus. |
